Baldivis Men's Shed

Community built. Tech that keeps up.

Baldivis Men's Shed is a community non-profit that's been running for nearly three decades. With 47+ active members meeting three mornings a week, they needed a full digital presence: a fast public site, online membership applications, and a facility showcase that could grow with the organisation.

The Challenge

What needed solving

The shed committee are volunteers, not developers. The site needed to handle membership applications reliably, send confirmation emails, and store submissions, all without server complexity that would be impossible to hand over. The existing setup was patchwork and unreliable.

The Solution

What we built

A high-performance static front-end served by Nginx, paired with a Node.js/Express REST API for membership and contact form submissions. The API handles rate limiting, input validation, and transactional email via Nodemailer. Everything runs in Docker Compose for reproducible deployments. The result: a blazing-fast site that achieves a perfect VelocityStack 100/100.

Key Features

What makes it work

Dockerised dev environment

Full Docker Compose stack with Nginx, the Node.js API, and Nodemailer for email. One command to spin up the entire environment locally.

Online membership application

Members fill out a form on the site. The API validates, rate-limits, and fires a confirmation email to the applicant and a notification to the committee.

Security-first API

The submission pipeline is hardened against misuse. Rate limiting, input validation, and authenticated email keep submissions reliable and the system resilient.

VelocityStack 100/100

All public pages built for zero-JS by default. Achieves a perfect VelocityStack 100/100 — one of the fastest community sites in WA.

Multi-million dollar facility showcase

Dedicated shed community page showcasing the new facility being built in partnership with the City of Rockingham and WA State Government.

Architecture: simplicity first.

A static front-end paired with a lightweight Node.js API gives us the best of both worlds: blazing-fast page loads (VelocityStack 100/100) with no server-side rendering overhead, plus a reliable form submission pipeline with input validation, rate limiting, and email. Docker Compose ties it all together so development is fully reproducible and handover is simple.

Presentation layer
Static build served via Nginx. Zero-JS by default. Achieves a perfect VelocityStack 100/100.
API layer
Express server handling membership forms, contact, and email. Decoupled from the front-end and fully containerised.
